Incident: New Police Officers Sworn In

Details: The Newport Police Department is pleased to announce that two new police officers have been hired by the Department. The new officers received their oath of office in front of the City Council. They will begin their Field Training Program immediately and start their academy training in April. The officers are:

Scott K. Davis. Ofcr. Davis was born in the Salem area and now resides in Lincoln County. He is married with three children. Ofcr. Davis is two classes short of his two year Associates Degree. He has close to 20 years of service with the Army National Guard and is an Iraq war veteran.

Andrew E. Ashpole. Ofcr. Ashpole has lived in Newport for many years and graduated from Newport High School. He is married with two children. Ofcr. Ashpole is a member of the Army National Guard and is an Iraq war veteran.

Incident: Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash Case: 07N-00470

Location: Yaquina Bay Road - Mile Post 1

Date/Time: March 4, 2007, 5:33 PM

Victim: Daniel L. Wilson, 58 years (5-16-48), of Toledo

Arrested: Edward J. Babinski, 47 years (1-21-60) of Siletz
DUII, Cited and Released at hospital

Details: On Sunday afternoon, March 4th at about 5:33 PM Wilson and Babinski were on separate motorcycles traveling east on Yaquina Bay Road. Wilson lost control of his motorcycle, ran off the road, striking a power support pole. Babinski witnessed the crash and stopped his motorcycle as soon as he could. He ran back to render aid to Wilson. At some point Babinski fell down a 30 foot embankment on the south side of the road.

Newport Fire Department and Pacific West Ambulance arrived on scene. They were unable to revive Wilson and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Fire personnel had to perform a rescue of Babinski in order to get him back up the embankment. He was taken to Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries sustained in the fall.

The Lincoln County Major Crash Team was activated and responded to the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. It was determined that Babinski had been operating his motorcycle under the influence of alcohol. The Major Crash Team is made up of officers from the Newport Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Lincoln City Police Department, Lincoln County District Attorney's Office and Lincoln County Emergency Services.
