Incident: Traffic Crash Events

Date 6-6-07

Details: On June 6, 2007 Emergency Responders in Newport were kept busy with a series of traffic crashes. Newport Police, Newport Fire and Pacific West Ambulance responded to six different traffic crashes from 10:50 AM to 5:20PM. No significant injuries were reported in any of the events although traffic had to be rerouted for about 30 minutes as the result of one crash.

At 9:56 AM a collision was reported at Hwy 101, between SW Hurbert and Alder Streets. Investigation revealed that an elderly woman left the municipal parking lot at SW Hurbert and 101 and while doing so she lost control of her vehicle, driving south on Hwy 101, into oncoming traffic. At one point she drove onto the curb and then crossed traffic to strike a boat trailer (no boat) that was being pulled northbound on Hwy 101. She then drove south on the Highway and got her car under control and stopped in the area of Alder street. Pieces of the boat trailer also flew under a south bound vehicle and caused minor damage to it. The driver was uninjured but shaken up from the incident. The incident is under investigation and no citations have been issued at this time.
At 10:54 AM a non injury traffic collision was reported in the area of the Newport Post Office. Police responded and helped exchange information. Apparently the driver of a Suburban backed into a Jeep while leaving the parking lot. Damage was under $1500.00
At 1:20 PM a non injury collision was reported at the Arctic Circle restaurant. The responding officer assisted the parties exchange information. A driver in a full size pickup was stopped at the intersection of NE 4th Street and began pulling out into traffic when he noticed a car coming, so he backed up. A medium size sedan had stopped behind the first and pulled up to the stop line when the first backed into him. Over $1500.00 damage was done to the sedan. No citations issued.
At 13:57 PM a non injury collision was reported at NW Coast Street and Beach Drive. The drivers exchanged information and did not need the assistance of the officer after he arrived.
At 1:57 PM another non injury crash was reported in the 900 block of Hwy 101, near the T & R Mini Mart. A vehicle had become high centered in the parking lot entry way and was leaking gas or oil. The Newport Fire Department responded and assisted. No report was taken.
At 4:48 PM emergency responders were sent to the intersection of Hwy 20 and NE Coos Streets. The driver of a van struck a sedan in the intersection of NE 1st and Coos Streets. The driver of the van was issued a citation for Driving While Suspended and Driving Uninsured. The crash occurred when the van driver pulled away from a stop sign and struck the sedan as it passed through the intersection. Significant damage was caused to the sedan but there were no injuries.
At 5:21 PM a collision was reported at Hwy 101 in the area of the Safeway store. The responding officer learned that as several vehicles passed the south entrance to the Safeway parking lot a car pulled out and into their path. The first vehicle in line stopped suddenly and the car directly behind it was unable to stop before striking the other. The vehicle that caused the incident was gone before officers arrived. No citations were issued. Information between the parties was exchanged as the damage to the vehicles exceeded $1500.00.
Summer brings more traffic on our roads and many people are in a hurry or sometimes do not pay close attention to the act of operating their cars. Motorists should be especially cautious at this time of year, allow plenty of time to reach their destinations, and should minimize distractions so they can pay full attention to their driving.
