Newport Police Department Serve Up Dollars for Special Olympics
Law Enforcement Officers Work for Tips at Bay Front Pizza,
to Fund Special Olympics Programs
Newport Oregon – Newport Police Department is teaming up with Bayfront Pizza in Newport to raise money for Lincoln County Special Olympics Oregon. On 06/07/08, Law Enforcement agents will become “celebrity servers,” and assist in serving, bussing, greeting and talking to diners about Special Olympics. The Newport Police Department is a participant of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) program, which is a year round effort to raise funds for and promote awareness of Special Olympics Oregon. Athletes from Lincoln County will join the LETR fundraisers at Bayfront Pizza to raise money for both the local and state program of Special Olympics Oregon. The “tips” the officers receive will go directly to Special Olympics Oregon, providing training and competition opportunities to athletes with intellectual disabilities.
This is a great opportunity for the community and law enforcement to help support our local Special Olympic Athletes.

All monies raised through the LETR program assist Special Olympics Oregon athletes compete in regional and state competitions, at no charge to the athlete. Founded in 1972, Special Olympics Oregon is a year-round program offering 15 different Olympic-style sports to athletes with intellectual disabilities. Throughout the state of Oregon, over 5,000 athletes participate in Special Olympics. Through Special Olympics, people with intellectual disabilities can enjoy the opportunity to be treated as people, not just as disabled. Incident: DUII / Traffic Crash Case: 08N-01843
Location: Hwy 101/NW 15th Streets
Date/Time: 05/23/08 at 9:26 p.m.
Suspect: Brandt, Robert “Bobby” Joseph, age 27 of Toledo, Oregon
Details: On 05/23/08 at 9:26 p.m., Newport Police officers were dispatched to Hwy 101 and NW 15th Streets on a report of a motor vehicle accident. Officers arrived to find two vehicles involved, one of which had rolled and was seriously damaged. Utility poles along the west side of the highway had been sheered off by one of the vehicles, and power lines were down across Hwy 101, as well as NW 15th and 16th Streets. Electricity was cut to residential and commercial customers to the north of the scene as far as Hwy 101 and NE 32nd St. Witnesses at the scene all identified the operator of a maroon colored Dodge Durango SUV as the person who caused the accident. Witnesses told officers that the vehicle had been southbound on Hwy 101 at speeds estimated at 65-70 mph while passing cars on the right. It suddenly veered off the road just south of NW 16th St., struck utility poles, fire hydrants, signs and other objects, flipped onto its top and spun in circles while crossing the width of the highway, where it struck another car and finally came to a stop after striking the curb in front of the Gold Chevrolet dealership and flipping back onto its wheels. Arcing power lines fell on the ground and onto passing vehicles, initially causing additional panic at the scene.
The driver of the Dodge Durango was identified as Robert Brandt of Toledo. He was displaying signs of intoxication at the scene and open containers of alcoholic beverages were found in his vehicle. He submitted to and failed sobriety tests and was initially arrested for DUII at the scene and lodged at the LCJ. Additional charges of Reckless Driving, and tharee counts of Criminal Mischief I were added to his charges at the completion of the investigation, with his bail set at $107,500. Additional charges of assault and related crimes are expected to be added after the extent of injuries to the other victims can be determined.
A large crowd of on lookers gathered at the scene, but most quickly dispersed when asked to do so because of the danger of all the downed power lines in the immediate area.
Two persons were treated at the scene by Newport Fire Department and Pacific West Ambulance personnel and were transported to SPCH for further treatment.
Personnel from the Central Lincoln PUD, Charter Communications, and ODOT all responded to the scene to assist. Traffic was diverted off of Hwy 101 for more than seven hours while the tangle of lines and damaged poles along Hwy 101 and NW 15th Street were cleared and repaired. All power was restored in the area by Central Lincoln PUD by 3:30 a.m.
Newport Police were assisted at by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and personnel from TCB Security Company.

Incident: Crash / DUII Case: 08N-01849
Location: South Beach State Park
Date/Time: 05/24/08 at 1:45 a.m.
Suspect: Jeromi Howard Noel, age 28 of Spokane WA
Details: On 05/24/08 at about 1:45 a.m., Newport Police were dispatched to the South Beach State on a report of a traffic crash. Upon arrival, officers found that a vehicle had left the roadway inside the camping area and struck a tree. The vehicle was badly damaged and the tree had been partially uprooted. Witnesses had contacted the driver and seized the keys for the vehicle from him before the police arrived.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jeromi Howard Noel of Spokane WA. He was displaying signs of intoxication and was arrested for DUII at the scene. Noel was transported to the LCJ, where he submitted to a breath test with the results of .16% BAC. Noel was booked at the jail on a single charge of DUII, with his bail set at $7500.
