NPD MEDIA RELEASE 09/05/2008 at 10:30 a.m.

Incident: Pedestrian Enforcement Operation

Details: On Friday, September 12, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Newport Police Department will conduct its final “Targeted Pedestrian Enforcement” operation for 2008. The operation will take place in the school zone crosswalk at NE 12th Street and NE Douglas Street. The four-hour operation will focus on drivers that fail to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Citations will be issued in an effort to raise public awareness and education of pedestrian right-of-way laws. Citations will be issued for all other violations as well. Informational flyers with be distributed to drivers that are stopped.

At intersections not controlled by electronic traffic control devices, Oregon law requires a driver to stop and remain stopped if a pedestrian is walking in the driver’s lane of traffic or in the adjacent lane. If a pedestrian is crossing in a crosswalk at a traffic light, the driver must stop if the pedestrian is within the driver’s lane, or six feet in the adjacent lane.
