MEDIA RELEASE 5-14-07 6:26 PM
Incident: Reckless Drive, Hit and Run Case: 07N-01116
Location: Hwy 101 and Hwy 20
Date/Time: 5-14-07 @ 1:15 PM
Victim: State of Oregon
Suspect: Geoffrey Carlton Hayes, DOB/2-24-74
3514 SE Dogwood St. South Beach
Details: Mr. Hayes was driving a late model Ford Focus in the area of NE Avery and 10th Street in an erratic manner. He then proceeded on to Hwy 101 and drove south striking a car that was also south bound on the highway and caused slight damage to that vehicle. Sgt. Teem was stopped in traffic, south bound and saw the car drive past in the north bound lane, at a high rate of speed. He observed the car enter the 6th street intersection, swerving past cross traffic. Other motorists who observed this moved out of Sgt Teem's way so he could pursue the car with lights and siren. The car drove at about 70mph south on Hwy 101 and at two different times the driver opened the door and stuck his leg and arm out of the car. The car drove around the southeast bound traffic at Highways 101 and 20 and then stopped only a foot away from a stopped northbound car. The driver got out and threw something into the intersection, before getting back into the car. Other officers arrived and Mr. Hayes was taken into custody without incident.
During this event traffic was heavy and there was significant foot and business traffic. There were no injuries. No indications of impairment were noted.
Mr. Hayes was lodged on one count of Reckless Driving and one count of Hit and Run, total bail $15000.00.
Any citizen who may have observed this incident and who was not contacted by police are encouraged to contact Sgt. Dave Teem.
