MEDIA RELEASE 072007 0230

Incident: Cars damaged / Arrest made Case: 07N-01715

Location: Hwy 101 / Yaquina Bay Bridge

Date/Time: 071907 / 0746 hours

Victim: Multiple victims

Suspect: Nathaniel A. Lynch age 27 of Portland, OR

Details: On 071907, starting at about 3 AM, Newport PD officers began receiving reports of cars being damaged and broke into in the Bay Front & South West sections of Newport. A suspect was developed and identified as Nathaniel A. Lynch of Portland, who was found riding a bike in the area of the calls. At the time he was first contacted, officers did not have enough information to arrest him. At about 0746 hours, Lynch was contacted again on the Yaquina Bay Bridge after it was discovered a new Multnomah County Circuit Court warrant had been located for his arrest that charged him with Contempt of Court. When Lynch was taken into custody, property from some of the thefts was located in his pockets. Lynch was originally lodged at the Lincoln County Jail on the warrant and 1 count each of Theft I and Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle.

After follow up investigations, it was determined that 9 or more vehicles were entered and/or damaged during this same time period, all in the same area of Newport. The suspect was using rocks, cinder blocks and other heavy items to break out windows of some of the cars. More property linked to the thefts was located in Lynch's possession and he is expected to be charged with several more counts of Theft, Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle and Criminal Mischief.

Any persons with information about these crimes is requested to contact Officer Jay Reynolds at the Newport Police Department at (541) 574-3348.
