NPD MEDIA RELEASE 7-23-07 5:00 PM

Incident: National Night Out

Location: Newport

Date/Time: Tuesday, August 7, 2007, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Details: The 24th Annual National Night Out (NNO), a unique crime prevention event sponsored by the Nation Association of Town Watch, has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 7, 2007. Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from 11,125 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases world wide. In all, 35.2 million people participated in NNO 2006. This year's 24th Annual NNO will be the largest ever!

National Night Out is designed to: (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods 'celebrate' NNO with a variety of events and activities such as: block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and fire departments, parades, flashlight walks, contests and youth programs. NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits our community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.

If your neighborhood is planning a National Night Out event on August 7th, please contact the Police Department and let us know.
