Newport Police Officers Graduate from Academy
On Friday July 27, 2007 Newport Police Officers Scott Davis and Andy Ashpole graduated from the Police Academy. Their training occurred at the Department of Public Service Standards and Training facility, in Salem, Oregon.
Officers Davis and Ashpole attended the 16 week course that consists of classroom lecture, physical fitness, physical skills development, firearms, pursuit driving, and which culminates in several days of "patrol". During the "patrol" training session's officers respond as they would to calls for service, and demonstrate that they have learned the requisite skills to work as a police officer. Both Officers Davis and Ashpole did very well academically. Officer Davis received recognition by receiving the "Excellence in Physical Fitness Award for the class.
Upon returning to Newport, both officers will be assigned to the 17 week Field Training and Evaluation Program. During that time they will work with a Field Training Officer who will provide further training in Criminal Law, City Ordinances, Traffic Law, and working with the public. Officers in the Training Program are evaluated in 31 different categories every work day. They work with several different trainers and on both the day and night shifts while in the program. After satisfactory completion of the Field Training Program they will be assigned to general patrol duties.
