Incident: Independence Day Travel
Details: Summer time always brings heavier traffic here on the beautiful central Oregon coast. This weather forecast for this 4th of July holiday promises to be warm and sunny which may increase our traffic congestion even more. The Newport Police Department asks that people, who are driving leave just a little earlier, slow down and take extra caution when traveling. If everyone does so we can have a safer and less eventful holiday. The mix of automobiles, recreational vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians traveling on and beside our roadways means that each of us must follow the rules of the road and be patient and extra vigilant.
Police Officers ask that when driving you wear your seatbelt and follow the speed limits. When riding bicycles for fun or transportation, wear a helmet and follow the rules that apply to bicycles, which are very similar to driving a car. Bicyclists are required to ride with traffic and use hand signals when turning. When walking beside the streets and roads you should use the crosswalks and wear bright or noticeable clothing during the evening and night time.
There will be additional officers patrolling the City of Newport during this holiday week. They will be enforcing the speed limits, and other safety issues such as illegal fireworks. Working together we can all have a safe and fun Holiday.
