Independence Day 2007
The Newport Police Department will have extra personnel staffed during this holiday week. Newport will experience an increase of citizens celebrating this years Independence Holiday. Along with this celebration is the use of "legal fireworks" and "Illegal Fireworks".
Illegal Fireworks are described as: Any combustible or explosive composition or substance, or any combination of such compositions or substances, or any other article which was prepared for the purpose of providing a visible or audible effect by combustion, explosion, deflagration or detonation, and includes firecrackers, torpedoes, bottle rockets, Roman candles, bombs, rockets, wheels, colored fires, fountains, mines, serpents or any other article of like construction or any article containing any explosive or inflammable compound, or any tablets or other device containing any explosive substances or flammable compound.
Fireworks are prohibited in all Oregon State Parks; this includes the South Jetty area in South Beach, Oregon and any beach. Oregon State Parks personnel have posted these areas and will actively be enforcing the prohibition.
The Police Department will take a proactive approach to enforcing possession and use of illegal fireworks. Officers will seize all illegal fireworks, and the person they are seized from could receive a citation with a fine of up to $5,000.00. Oregon Revised Statue 480.120 Sale, possession and use of fireworks - is a Class B Misdemeanor.
