Incident: Explosions Heard Near Newport High Case: 07N-02507

Location: Lincoln County Fairgrounds/NE 6th and Eads Street

Date/Time: 10-11-07 @ 12:15-12:30

Details:

During the lunch period at the Newport High School, officers were called to the area regarding explosions heard in the area of the campus. The Newport High School (NHS) Administrative team had started investigating the location of the explosions. They found that one explosion occurred at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds and the other occurred at the intersection of N.E. Sixth and N.E. Eads.

Newport High was immediately locked down as the Newport Police and Newport Fire responded and checked the exploded item. NHS campus was searched inside and out and no devices were found on campus. Two NHS students were immediately contacted and admitted to being involved with exploding the two devices.

The explosions were from a seal deterrent device used in commercial fishing industries to scare seals away from fisheries. While legal to use for legitimate purpose, these devices used in this manner are unlawful. Newport High School is following district policy regarding this incident as it relates to the two students and the Newport Police Department is continuing their investigation. At no time were students or staff in danger. NHS did a great job following lock down procedures which are practiced regularly for student and staff safety.

The names of the involved juveniles are being withheld until the conclusion of the investigation. The two were charged with Possession of an Explosive Device a C Felony, Disorderly Conduct C Misdemeanor and Reckless Endangerment A Misdemeanor. They were lodged at the Lincoln County Juvenile Department.
