National Missing Children Day

May 25th is National Missing Children Day. Between 1979 and 1981 a series of high-profile missing-children cases became national headlines. Three such cases contributed to the shock of the nation’s consciousness bringing attention to the seriousness of child victimization and forever changing the response by law-enforcement agencies to reports of missing children. In recognition of this day, the Newport Police, in partnership with Wal-Mart, are going to have a “Missing Children” day event. The Newport Police Volunteers will be at Wal Mart to provide information and help parents put together Child Identification kits for their children on May 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Newport Police Department participates in the Amber Alert system, as well as “A Child is Missing” program. Research of actual missing children incidents has proven that the most positive outcome in these cases is when a child is located as soon as possible after being reported missing.  Having the public involved as the “eyes and ears” of Law Enforcement greatly increases the chance of finding a lost or missing child. Both the “Amber Alert” and “A Child is Missing” programs are notification systems to involve the public in finding lost or missing children. While the Amber Alert system uses the public radio and traffic billboard systems to alert the public of a missing child, the A Child is Missing program allows for notification by calling telephone numbers within a given area and playing a recorded message.

National Missing Children Day is a reminder to all parents and guardians of the need for high-quality photographs of their children for use in case of an emergency, and for everyone to pay close attention to the posters and photographs of missing children.  Join us on May 24 to make this an annual reminder to make child protection a community and national priority.
