Newport Police Issue 12 citations in Compliance Check Operation

In an effort to reduce underage drinking in the City of Newport, the Newport Police Department conducted compliance checks on Thursday, June 12, 2008.  The checks resulted in a number of citations issued to clerks that sold alcohol to minor decoys.

This operation was conducted with the assistance of the Oregon Liquor Control Commission and volunteer minor “decoys.”  A media release was published prior to the checks, announcing that Compliance Checks were going to be conducted sometime during last week.  Even with the notification several businesses sold alcohol to the minor decoys.  The Newport Police Department continues to practice a “Zero Tolerance” policy in regards to underage drinking and those who provide or sale alcohol to persons under 21 years of age.

Of the 29 businesses that were contacted, 12 of them sold alcohol to minors.  They included: Bay Market, Bayscapes Gallery & Coffee House, Beven’s Market & Deli, Bier One, LaMaison, Local Ocean Seafoods, Nye Beach Gallery, Oceana Natural Food, Safeway, TR Mini Mart, The Lighthouse Loft, and The Main Sail.  Of the 12 businesses that sold alcohol to the minor decoys, nine clerks did ask and looked at the decoy’s valid Oregon ID card before selling the alcohol to the minor. Three clerks did not ask to see ID before selling the decoys alcohol.

The Newport Police Department would like to stress the importance that vendors check ID, verify the age of the ID holder, and, if in doubt, don’t sell the alcohol.  The Police Department would like to thank those vendors that did check i.d. and refused to sell alcohol to the minor decoys.

EUDL Coordinator Liz Mulder said, “It is always disappointing when a business sells alcohol to minors, especially under these circumstances. In order to effect a real change in our community we must educate everyone on the dangers of underage drinking.”

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or finding out what can be done to help reduce underage drinking is encouraged to contact the Newport Police Department or Liz Mulder, EUDL Coordinator, at 574-0649.
