Location: SW 5th /
Date/Time: 04/12/2008 @ 4:31 a.m.
Suspect: Toni May Schroeder, 21 years of age, Toledo Resident
Details: On 04/12/2008 at about 4:31 a.m., Newport Officers and Newport Fire Department responded to a reported car fire at SW 5th / SW Woods. Officers arrived on scene and found a vehicle off of the side of the roadway that was fully engulfed in flames. Newport Fire Department extinguished the fire and confirmed the vehicle was unoccupied.
Newport Officers began an investigation and talked with the vehicle owner, Toni Schroeder, who was on scene. Schroeder reported that her vehicle was stolen just prior to the fire by an unknown person. Newport Officers continued the investigation and learned that a friend of Schroeder’s had taken her vehicle. The friend lost control of the vehicle and drove off of the roadway.
Schroeder initially lied to Police about her vehicle being stolen to protect her friend. Schroeder declined prosecution of her friend for taking her car.
The exact cause of the car fire is unknown, but believed to be associated with the vehicle’s tires spinning on the roadway shoulder when the driver unsuccessfully attempted to drive the vehicle back onto the roadway.
Schroeder was arrested for Initiating a False Report.
