       Incident:           Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation (PSE)                 

 

Details:          The Newport Police Department successfully completed a Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation on East Olive Street in Newport on May 27, 2008.  The local enforcement effort was funded by the traffic safety grant from The Bicycle Transportation Alliance and Willamette Pedestrian Coalition.  The purpose of the operation was to raise driver and public awareness regarding pedestrian safety.  The operation involved the use of a decoy pedestrian crossing in the marked crosswalk at NE Eads Street.  Traffic cones were positioned on the highway indicating where the operation began for motorist traveling both directions through the operation.  The operation lasted 2.5 hours.

 

15 traffic citations and written warnings were issued by officers, during the operation.  One motorist was issued a citation for Passing in a No Pass Zone, and one was issued a written warning for Speeding.  Nine motorists were issued citations for failing to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, four motorists were issued written warnings.  The majority of motorists who traveled through the operation correctly stopped for the pedestrian in the crosswalk.

 

The Newport Police Department would like to thank the businesses in the area of the operation that gave their support and assistance with the operation.   The next operation will be held in July; a media release will precede the operation.
